2007 | Playing Doctor

(first presented) August 2007 | Gladstone Hotel | This is Not a Reading Series event | Toronto
group exhibition | April 2008 | York University Gallery of Contemporary Art

Playing Doctor was developed for an event called This is Not a Reading Series at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto (2007), in conjunction with a book launch for The Haircut. It is a life-size version of the children’s board-game “Operation”, where players were invited onto stage (see photos above) to use tweezers (kitchen tongs) to extract ‘organs’ without hitting the edges. (Hitting the edges of the organ hole resulted in a buzzing light/ losing the game) Each organ came with an accompanying description card highlighting its relevant features, including some few lesser-known characteristics of said organ for the individual depicted.
